I apologize in advance.
What I’m about to reveal, dear reader, is probably too much for where we’re at in our relationship.
But last year, I was on a road trip and stopped to get gas. I was hungry, so I decided to pick up something I hadn’t had since I was a kid—a Slim Jim.
Thirty minutes after eating that stupid meat stick, I desperately needed to use the restroom. I’m talking about real desperation. Like the kind where, if there was an old lady in the way, I just might have pushed her (thankfully there wasn’t).
It was that bad.
And since then, I haven’t tried a slice of jerky.
It’s a sad story, I know.
How could I let those sorry multinational corporations ruin my love for a classic American snack?
Well, luckily I’ve got a few friends who’ve brought me out of the darkness and into the jerky-tinted light.
Their names? Jerky Subscription.
Jerky Subscription sent me their big box to see if they could change my mind.
Did the service rebuild my trust with America’s favorite road trip snack? Keep reading for my full review of Jerky Subscription.

What Is Jerky Subscription?
No, it’s not a trick. Jerky Subscription is exactly what it sounds like.
Every month, JS will send you two, four, or six bags of small-batch artisanal beef jerky from US companies.
And these aren’t your standard supermarket jerkies either. With flavors like Chesapeake Crab Spice and Imperial Stout, you’re getting one-of-a-kind snacks that pique your curiosity before they satisfy.
If you regularly pick up jerky as a workday snack or do like I did and stock up for long drives, the unusual flavors will give you something a little extra to chew on.
And if you’re actually into making your own beef jerky (we know there’s a big community out there), checking out what small-scale producers are doing makes excellent food for thought.
Ok, enough with the puns.
Let’s bite down on the specifics.
Jerky Subscription Unboxing & Review
Jerky Subscription sent me their Six Jerky box to try. I’m not going to lie, it was nice to know I had a hefty snack collection sitting on the shelf just in case I ever started getting hangry.
Packaging
Jerky Subscription’s deliveries arrive in a simple labeled bag. I get roughly 10 million cardboard boxes a day (and so does everyone else in my building. I think the trash-guy hates Jeff Bezos).
The presentation wasn’t anything special, but truthfully, I was glad to skip breaking down another cardboard box. When it comes to beef jerky, I’m not looking for anything artful. Straightforward works for me.
Inside the bag was jerky from three different companies:
- Righteous Felon
- Tong!
- Brooklyn Biltong
Righteous Felon
Righteous Felon Craft Jerky stuck out to me the most. First of all, there were three bags in my shipment, so the odds were high that they’d be the first product I grabbed.
Of the brands featured by Jerky Subscription, Righteous Felon had the most interesting flavors. I got:
- O.G Hickory Smoked
- Victorious B.I.G (infused with Victory Brewing Company’s Storm King Stout)
- Maryland Monroe (hickory smoked with Chesapeake Crab Spice)
Being a craft beer enthusiast, I was most excited about the beer-infused jerky. As it turns out, it was delicious. But my favorite was the Chesapeake Crab Spice.
Tong!
Tong! is an LA-based craft jerky company and my shipment had their original flavor and their salt & pepper flavor.
I couldn’t even wait until after I took pictures to dive in and try a bite.
Brooklyn Biltong
I remember when I first discovered biltong.
I was in South Africa leading a group of students. We’d just finished diving with Great White sharks and were on our way to a conversation area to find and disarm poacher traps (seriously, one of the coolest days of my life).
We stopped the van at a gas station and I went in for some snackies. I saw what looked like beef jerky, but they called it biltong. I picked up a bag and the stuff blew my mind.
Biltong is similar to jerky, but it’s air-dried instead of smoked. This leads to a more tender chew with less smokey flavor. It’s great.
I was happy to get a pack of biltong in my jerky delivery—it brought back great memories. And it was delicious.
Customer Service
Jerky Subscription is easy to get in touch with. You can chat with them directly on their website, through email, or through their Instagram account.
If you’re not a fan of one of the flavors in your pack, they’ll send you a little something extra in your following delivery.
And if you’d like to cancel, there’s a simple button on your account page that makes it easy to quit the service. I always take an easy-cancel button as a mark of a great subscription service. Good businesses know that customers stay if the service treats them well. They don’t need to hide their cancel button.
My Overall Thoughts on Jerky Subscription
What I Like
The artisan, small-batch jerkies had unique and delicious flavorings that I’d never be able to find at a supermarket.
I loved that they included some biltong. No, it’s not strictly jerky, but it’s dried beef, and that’s good enough for me.
In writing this piece, I looked up several different beef jerky subscription services. Jerky Subscription is most reasonably priced, especially given the quality of the products.
What I Don’t Like
I picked up the six-package delivery and there were only three brands. I could see this being a downside if someone were interested in trying a wide variety of hard-to-find jerkies from around the country.
The Verdict
It’s pretty simple.
If you’re looking for high-quality, artisan jerky delivered to your door, Jerky Subscription is your best option.
There are a few other similar subscriptions out on the market that offer similar quality products, but none do it at the price that these guys do.
I enjoyed learning about the three brands that were in my shipment, but in the future, I’d like to see a different brand for each package. Learning about six brands is more fun than learning about three.
I’d also like to see them pack in more odd-ball flavors like their stout-infused and crab-spice. Those were my favorites and it’s because they’re unusual.
All-in-all, if you’re looking to pick up Jerky Subscription for yourself or as a gift, you can’t go wrong.
Their great product, solid customer service, and easy gifting options make JS a winner in our books.
Jerky Subscription's attractive price point and excellent customer service make them a top choice if you’re looking to get your jerky on, monthly.
