Getting a sweet tooth as an adult usually means reaching for a late night tub of ice cream or “accidentally” leaving your local cafe with a bag full of chocolate croissants.
Afterwards, you feel awful and in need of a nap.
Magic Spoon has developed a line of colorful, crunchy cereal that’s reminiscent of your favorite childhood brands but without all the terrible ingredients, and even delivers protein and keto-friendly benefits.
Let’s see what all this sorcery is about, shall we?
Skip Ahead
What Is Magic Spoon?
Magic Spoon is a trailblazing cereal brand founded by two friends Greg and Gabi who grew up munching on sugary cereal that left them crashing from empty carbs, GMOs, and sugar.
The two did their research and spent over a year experimenting to develop what they call a “guilt-free treat that tastes like you remember and you can eat at any time of the day.”
Their cereals offer a hefty serving of protein, low carbs, no sugar, and are grain and gluten-free.
The amount of protein in each serving is ample enough to pique the interest of gym-goers and guys who generally care about their fitness level and physique. This is the perfect treat to knock your sweet tooth out cold and escape with none of the standard side effects involved.
Things to Consider Before Buying Cereal from Magic Spoon
If you’re into eating cereal, you probably already know what you like and what you don’t like. Most cereals fall into one of two categories: indulgent or healthy.
The cereal you might allow yourself to eat as a weekend treat is likely different from the one you’d eat in the morning or as a snack to get clean-burning energy throughout your day.
Magic Spoon is making a healthy, clean-burning snack that you look forward to eating and doesn’t feel like a chore made out of flavorless bran. Shipments come in boxes of 4 and you can pick from 4 of the same flavor (Fruity, Peanut Butter, Cocoa, Frosted, Blueberry, Cinnamon), a variety pack, or build your own box of 4.
Mix the Cocoa and Peanut Butter flavors together and you'll never see the world in the same light again.
Magic Spoon Review
After munching down several boxes of Magic Spoon, I’ve broken down the flavor, texture, price, macros, and just about everything else you need to know about this trendy new cereal brand.
Flavor & Texture
Magic Spoon has delivered a blast from the past. These cereals are sweet, crunchy, and remarkably similar in flavor to big box brands.
For instance, the Cocoa tastes strikingly similar to Cocoa Puffs, the Frosted mimics Frosted Flakes, and the Fruity will make you briefly think you accidentally purchased a box of Fruity Pebbles. This is also true of Cinnamon which is a lot like Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
However, the Peanut Butter and Blueberry flavors didn’t taste distinctly like big box brand counterparts. Magic Spoon offers six flavors in total: Fruity, Peanut Butter, Cocoa, Cinnamon, Frosted, and Blueberry.
With no added sugar, one would think these cereals wouldn’t be sweet enough. It’s entirely the opposite. These cereals are plenty sweet and in some cases a bit too sweet. This was most noticeable in the Fruity, Frosted, and Blueberry flavors.
Even still, I’m impressed the Magic Spoon team has achieved delicious flavors using ingredients like whey and casein protein and sugar alternatives. You are able to notice a subtle whey protein after taste, but it’s certainly not a dealbreaker.
And just like the days of being a young tike, I still enjoy sipping the sweet milk after all the cereal is gone. I think Magic Spoon would pair best with oat milk, but milk choice is subjective so go with the type you usually buy.
Like other big box brand cereals, the texture is light and crunchy. These nice loud crunches as you make your way through the bowl make eating this cereal that much more fun.
Though, if your gums or the roof of your mouth are sensitive, let the milk seep into the cereal for a minute or so before you start chowing down. The texture itself is a bit rough.
Ingredients
If your first thought was “does this stuff taste any good?”, then your second thought was probably “okay, but what’s it made of?”
Magic Spoon employs a pretty nifty blend of ingredients to achieve big flavor, no sugar, and an overall low calorie count. The first ingredient is a “Milk Protein Blend” consisting of Casein and Whey protein concentrates.
Whey protein can be sweet by itself in some products, but Magic Spoon adds a “Sweetener Blend” as well. This is composed of Allulose and Monk Fruit Extract.
If you’ve been following the flurry of healthy products that have come out in the last five to ten years, then you’ve surely heard of Monk Fruit as an increasingly popular natural sweetener used in anything from drinks and salad dressings to cookies and granola bars.
Monk Fruit is a small green melon from southern China that was named after the monk who cultivated it hundreds of years ago. The extract comes from the dried fruit and is over 150 times sweeter than sugar. Perhaps this is why I felt some flavors were a bit intense in their sweetness.
Monk Fruit extract also has no calories or carbs and doesn’t raise blood glucose levels. These attributes have made it a shining star in the healthy snacking world.
I had heard of Monk Fruit extract before, but Allulose had me scratching my head. Luckily, Magic Spoon has reserved a blurb of copy titled “Our Magic” on the bottom of one side of every box to explain their Sweetener Blend.
Allulose, they explain, “is a rare sugar found in raisins, figs, and maple syrup. It contains only 10% of the calories of regular sugar and is only slightly metabolized by your body.”
Allulose, like fructose or glucose, is a monosaccharide or single sugar. The difference is that the body doesn’t really use allulose as fuel, so it can often pass through you without bloating, gas, or digestive problems.
The rest of the ingredients are a blend of oils and smaller specific ingredients that differ per box. For example, the Cocoa flavor has cocoa powder and the Fruity flavor has other natural flavors.
Mix the Cocoa and Peanut Butter flavors together and you'll never see the world in the same light again.
When to Eat Magic Spoon
Not surprisingly, this stuff is filling. Protein feeds your muscles and offers essential amino acids for tons of functions in the body. After 1 or 1.5 heaping bowls, you’ll feel like you just ate a substantial meal.
Each box comes with 5 servings, but clocks in at only 140-150 calories per serving with around 13 grams of protein. That means that if you consumed 1.5-2 bowls of Magic Spoon after a workout, it would be the equivalent in protein of drinking a standard protein shake.
Again, everyone’s cereal preferences are subjective. Some religiously scarf down a bowl every morning to kick off their work day, others use it more like a snack or even a healthy dessert.
Personally, I would reach for a box of Magic Spoon after dinner as a healthier late night snack that wouldn’t mess up my sleep schedule and make me feel crummy right before bed. I’d also enjoy a bowl of this on the weekends with a cup of coffee.
This would be a killer replacement for a coffee shop pastry and provide you with protein instead of empty carbs and sugar the way a muffin or donut would.
Though, when you assess the macros there’s hardly an inappropriate time to be snacking on Magic Spoon. You won’t be getting a sugar spike that tapers off and makes you feel like a pile of sludge when afternoon rolls around. And there’s only 4 grams of net carbs for all you disciplined fitness junkies out there.
With no milk handy, I’d still enjoy a few handfuls of this stuff directly from the box.
The amount of protein in each serving is ample enough to pique the interest of gym-goers and guys who generally care about their fitness level and physique. This is the perfect treat to knock your sweet tooth out cold and escape with none of the standard side effects involved.
What Do Other Reviewers Say About Magic Spoon?
On Google, Magic Spoon has thousands of reviews which round out to a 4-star rating. The guys who liked Magic Spoon noted the flavor and healthy attributes. Some guys didn’t feel like it lived up to the hype and couldn’t justify the premium price point.
I agree that the price is steep for a box of cereal, but if you view it like 5 bowls of dessert or 5 protein bars in a box, I’d gladly pay $2 for either a dessert or a protein bar just about anywhere.

Who is Magic Spoon for?
Magic Spoon is for any guy who misses the indulgent flavor of sugary breakfast cereals but doesn’t want the empty calories, sugar crash, and overall negative effects that come with consuming processed crap.
The amount of protein in each serving is ample enough to pique the interest of gym goers and guys who generally care about their fitness level and physique. This is the perfect treat to knock your sweet tooth out cold and escape with none of the standard side effects involved with satiating a sweet tooth.
The Verdict
Cereal is a tough market. Some give you clean-burning energy but taste worse than the box they come in. Others feed your sweet tooth with loads of sugar that’ll have you napping at your desk by 2pm.
Magic Spoon has engineered a crossover that’s tasty as all get out but also packs a potent serving of protein with no added sugar and is grain and gluten-free. This is a total rarity in the breakfast aisle.
While the texture can be a little bit rough, the flavor and crunch will put you in a time machine and send you back to childhood, sitting at your dining room table, munching on cereal without a care in the world.
Consider when you would normally eat cereal and when you would normally grab for an indulgent treat. Magic Spoon is a reliable alternative to whatever you’ve been snacking on during those times.
Mix the Cocoa and Peanut Butter flavors together and you'll never see the world in the same light again.
